Basic Information on Cosplay&Japanese Fashion Subculture Wear

Hi there everyone!

This is Zhuo Heng here once again! I am doing a follow up on the 6-4 Gathering@EOY 08. Some of you who are not exposed to this culture might be wondering what is cosplay? Or perhaps, be confused by the terms Japanese Fashion Subculture Wear and thinking "What is THAT?". Fear not! This article will hopefully clear up some of your doubts! =D If you don't even know what is EOY 08 yet, you need to read the information here!

I will explain very briefly and with the pictures supported, I hope that you will be able to understand what I am trying to say!

It's quite impossible to explain ALL in details as e.g. In Lolita, there are different kind of Lolita styles such as Classic Lolita, Sweet Lolita, Country Lolita, Gothic Lolita etc. and it will take forever just to explain only on Lolita and not to mention other styles!

Let me start with Cosplay with the help of Wikipedia!

Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure), short for "costume play",^[1] is a type of performance art whose participants outfit themselves, with often-elaborate costumes and accessories, as a specific character. Characters are usually sourced in various Japanese and East Asian media, including manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, and fantasy movies. Other sources include performers from J-pop, J-rock, Visual Kei, fantasy music stories (such as stories by the band Sound Horizon), novels, and objects from cyberspace or the real world that are unique and dramatic (especially if they have or can be given an anthropomorphic form).
Cosplay participants ("cosplayers") form a subculture centered around wearing their costumes and reenacting scenes or inventing likely behavior inspired by their chosen sources. In some circles, the term cosplay has been broadened to include simply wearing a costume, without special consideration given to enacting characters in a performance context.

Whew. That's a chunk of text. Ok, one thing I have to ensure that you guys out there understand is Cosplay and Japanese Fashion Subculture Wear are entirely different things! The only time when Japanese Fashion Subculture is considered Cosplay is when you are cosplaying a character from manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games,fantasy movies etc who is wearing the exact same wear. In other occasions, Japanese Fashion Subculture is considered a FASHION. Next up, Japanese Fashion Subculture Wear!

Japanese Fashion Subculture Wear, to the people who wear them, are clothes. Just like how we regard our T-Shirts and Jeans. To some, these are even their basic everyday wear. =D There are many types of Japanese Fashion Subculture Wear and I shall only introduce to you several of them and they are Lolita, Decora, and Ganguro/Yamanba.

First up, Lolita with the help of Wikipedia!

Lolita(ロリータ・ファッション, roriita fasshon) is a fashion subculture in Japan that is primarily influenced by Victorian children’s clothing as well as costumes from the Rococo period. Lolita has made this into a unique fashion by adding gothic and original design elements to the look. From this, Lolita fashion has evolved into several different sub styles and has created a devoted subculture in Japan. The Lolita look consists primarily of a knee length skirt or dress, headdress, blouse, petticoat, knee length socks or stockings and rocking horse or high heel/platform shoes. Teddy bears and dolls such as Super Dollfies are often carried to emphasize the childlike look.^[1]
Although the origin of Lolita fashion is unclear, it is likely the movement started in the late 1970s when famous labels including Pink House and Milk, began selling clothes that would be considered "Lolita" by today's standards. Shortly after that came Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, and Metamorphose temps de fille. In the 1990s, Lolita fashion became better recognised, with bands like Malice Mizer and other Visual Kei (or visual type) bands coming into popularity. These bands wore intricate costumes, which fans began adopting as their own style.^[2] The style soon spread from its origins in the Kansai region, and ultimately reached Tokyo where it became popularized throughout Japanese youth culture. Today, Lolita fashion has grown so much in popularity that it can be found even in department stores in Japan. Today many young people wear the fashion all around the world.

Although "Lolita" is a reference to Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel, and lolita fashion is often worn by teens, most followers of the style do not consider it overtly sexual. Adherents present themselves as Victorian children or baby dolls and prefer to look "cute" rather than "sexy". Many Lolitas claim that the term 'Lolita' doesn't necessarily have anything to do with sex at all. The usage of the word may also be considered wasei-eigo. Japanese culture places a higher value upon extremely youthful appearance and behavior than Western, and some adult women buy large amounts of products, such as Hello Kitty goods, that are typically marketed only to children in the West. SweetLoli is perhaps a more visible extension of this phenomenon. ^[16]

Secondly, Decora!

Decora, or Decorer as it is also known, means "to decorate" or "be decorated". Featured primarily in the popular magazine and book series fRuiTs, Decora
(or Decorer as it is commonly known) is a more wearer-interpereted fashion.
It almost always features multiple layers of clothing and massive amounts of accessories. It can range from extremely bright, neon colors and tons of cheap hair clips, bracelets, and multiple layers of differen patterned socks, tights, skirts, and shirts, to a more muted,demure and somewhat stylish layered look.

Thirdly, Ganguro/Yamanba with the help of Wikipedia!

Ganguro appeared as a new fashion style in Japan in the early 1990s and is prevalent mostly among young women and women in their early 20s to this date. In ganguro fashion, a deep tan is combined with hair dyed in shades of orange to blonde, or a silver grey known as "high bleached". Black ink is used as eye-liner and white concealer is used as lipstick and eyeshadow. False eyelashes, plastic facial gems, and pearl powder are often added to this. Platform shoes and brightly-coloured outfits complete the ganguro look. Also typical of ganguro fashion are tie-dyed sarongs, miniskirts, stickers on the face, and lots of bracelets, rings, and necklaces.

Yamanba (ヤマンバ, Yamanba) and manba (マンバ, manba) are terms often used to describe extreme practitioners of ganguro fashion. Old school Yamanba and Manba; (particularly known as 2004 Manba); featured dark tans and white lipstick, pastel eye make-up, tiny metallic or glittery adhesives below the eyes, brightly-coloured contact lenses, plastic dayglo-coloured clothing, and incongruous accessories, such as Hawaiian Leis (often the Alba Rosa brand). Stickers on the face died out shortly after 2004, and for a while, Manba died. Yamanba is now more extreme, and hair is often multicoloured, and usually synthetic. 2008's Manba has seen a darker tan, and no facial decoration (stickers). Hair is usually neon/bright colours, with pink being a favourite. Wool, extensions and clips are worn to make hair appear longer. Clothing remains the same, although Leis are worn less frequently now. Manba and Yamanba are not to be confused. Yamanba has white make-up only above the eye, while Manba has makeup below the eye also. Stuffed animals, bracelets, bells and hibiscuses are worn. The male equivalent is called a "center guy" (センター街, Sentāgai, Center Street), a pun on the name of a pedestrian shopping street near Shibuya Station in Tokyo where yamanba and center guys are often seen.

dun ask me who is coming who is not...cos i ~~TOTALLY~~ have no idea...

Release of PSLE Results on 20 November 2008

On Thursday, 20 November 2008, was the big day for those who had taken the PSLE. The release of the results for PSLE does not concern me in anyway but my mother and I decided to be two busybodies and went to PPS to await for the results. My mother left home around 11.05am to meet her friend who has a son who took PSLE this year. Amazingly, my mother's friend had dreamt of the results which her son will get and she was right! O.o

Well, I left the house at around 11.15am and by chance, I met my friend, Adelyn who was on the way to school to see what kind of results her younger sister will get. We walk to PPS and when we arrived, we saw tons of anxious looking parents, crowding in the hall.

Finally at around 11.45pm, the Principal started her slide show and went on with the ways of submitting the options for choosing of Secondary Schools and also ways of knowing the results of of which school the child is posted to. I was quite surprised by the fact that instead of the traditional methods of submitting the option form by going to the school office, you can even submit your options online and know the results via SMS or online. That's pretty advanced as compared to the days when we need to travel all the way to the school to submit the form and also to know the results. She went on to showing the overall results for this year.

Finally, the new Top PSLE Student for both streams were born. I think that the Principal was too excited for she had forgotten to ask the photographer to take photos of Top Student and the Top Ten Students and they had to went up on stage all over again.

In overall, the situation was the same as each year. Happiness and disappointments. Tears of sadness or happiness.

I suppose in a few months, this will apply to us again.

I wish everyone good luck in advance! =D

I can't believe how time flies!!! It's only 7 days more till Cosfest! It's going to be my first time going to such a big Cosplay event! I am so excited and I am seriously counting down to the day of Cosfest with each passing day. I am going to wear my only Lolita on only one day of the 2 day event. As for the other day, I will be wearing the usual Singapore street clothes. I must make a list of stuff to do or I might forget to bring something! Plus~, it's my first time wearing the Alice Bow Hairband which I had just bought for $8 from Neko with my Lolita!!!!!~~~~ =D

I am so envious of Elie who can buy a new Lolita! But then, it's Bodyline which is very notorious for it's bad quality. Plus, the shipping fees is so expensive! A Alice Bow which cost around SGD$12 will cost around SGD$52 with shipping fees! With this money, I might as well buy a BABY, THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT or other non-off brand products as it will cost around the same. =.=||

But first, I have to do well for my "O" Level Chinese Oral and finish my D&T Product!

I must give it all the best!! Let's hope that I will do well in "O" Levels!

P.S I am so glad that I had reminded Huang Wang of the hair accessories and bag which she needed to prepare as she had totally forgotten all about it. She said that she will go shopping for the stuff today. Let's hope that she will find all the things she need and be ready for Cosfest!!! =D

This is probably going to be the biggest event gathering of Lolitas, and we hope to have your support for this event! You are recommended to dress in Loli as we will take pictures. This event is something not too be missed!

The event is open to everyone, not just limited to Lolitas, and tickets are available for sale at Black Alice. You may choose your seats, based on a first-come-first-served basis.

We will suggest getting the tickets together with your friends, so that you can choose your seats and seat together. Ticket collection will be in 2nd-3rd week of June, and you'll be notified via our mailing list, Sgcafe and our blog.

There's two days of The Matsuri namely JRock(15March2008, Saturaday) and Cosplay(16March2008, Sunday). This post shall be all about the photos I took on JRock Matsuri, 15 March 2008(Saturaday) and also briefly on what happened there.

This is a follow up on the JRock Matsuri which you can read about it here. Remember the weather reports in the newspapers predicting that it would rain on the weekend? Well, it did in the middle of the day. It was not a slight drizzle but a heavy downpour. A lot of people escaped into Vivo City to prevent their precious clothes and equipments from getting wet. While waiting for the rain to stop, a lot of people decided to hold photo shoots sessions at the indoors of Vivo City while some others wander around in Vivo City. Of course a lot of the shoppers in Vivo City was shocked. A huge lot of people wearing "weird" clothes (Cosplayers/Lolitas/Punk/Gothic etc) had invaded the mall! While for some tourists, were curious and stare boldly at us. Some shop owners recognize our clothes as "Japanese clothes" and asked us what was happening. We simply told them of the event that was supposed to be going on. Thankfully, the rain stopped after a while and the event was able to go on smoothly.

There's two days of The Matsuri namely JRock(15March2008, Saturaday) and Cosplay(16March2008, Sunday). This post shall be all about the photos I took on JRock Matsuri, 15 March 2008(Saturaday) and also briefly on what happened there.

While newspapers reported that the rain will continue on Saturday, the weather went to the opposite as it was a hot day. Elie and I meet up and went to the event together reaching there at around 1pm++ although the event was supposed to start at 4pm. Well....as we were too early, there was not a lot of people there. We decided to shop around Vivo City while waiting for the time to past by. Finally nearing to towards 4pm, the rest of my forum friend arrived and that was the same for many others. We left around 5pm+++.....now for the pictures!!! ^0^

Anyone going to The Matsuri 2008: the butterfly effect??? =D I am going! I will be going to both days with Elie. For the Jrock, I will be wearing clothes that you always find on Singapore streets. As for the Cosplay, I will be wearing my recently bought Baby, The Stars Shine Bright lolita full dress with the Infant blouse in the inside(details to be posted in a new post with pictures). In this way, Adelyn will have a chance to see my Lolita and also Elie-chan's for she will be wearing her Infant full dress as well! =^0^=

DAY ONE - JROCK MATSURI

4pm- 9.30pm Official JRock Bands Competition 2008
Individuals and bands to perform/ complete at the MATSURI, whereas the winner(s) will be promote and groom further as recording artiste/ band. The bands comprising youths will be encouraged to display their music talents & showmanship in this series of JROCK Bands Competition.

FORMAT:
Each participating band is required to perform 4 songs either in covers or original(preferred), of which at least 2 songs to be in Japanese and the 3rd can have the option of Jap or English.

• Technique & Skills 25% • Diction 20% • Showmanship 25% • Presentation 30%

5 pm Best JRock Cosplayers

Group 1 positions

FORMAT:
Parade in your best costumes, mimic the voice, appearance, dressing and even manner of your idols and pose for the cameras.

I have one problem......please help!!!

WHAT SHOULD I BUY FOR MY HOST FAMILY?
I need to buy presents to thank my host family for hosting me for 5 days. Something that represent Singapore, or something unique about Singapore. My mother says that I can buy pork floss(if they are not halal or vegetarian) and the pineapple tart that we usually eat during Chinese New Year. Do I need to say more??? I will be there all this time!!! Well maybe not on 27 November because I will be taking a night flight on 26 November back to Singapore. I will be arriving in Singapore in the morning of 27 November 2007. Luckily the last day for the Digital Game Development Programme is a half day programme or I will not have enough time to do some last minute packing or whatever before I go off to New Zealand! Stormy weather.....there is a lot of thunder rumbling and lightening flashing going on now. Ok. So this is just going to be a very quick update. I changed the picture to represent me because that my teacher said it was not clear when it was reduced in size. This had to be done for the back of the Polo Shirt had to be able to contain all the 29(or was it 30?) students design. Apparently, my picture was too complicated as the printer could not capture the tiny details when it was reduced in size thus causing a patch of black on my picture. She actually ask me to meet her in the general office after exam. When I got there, she actually told me to find another picture to replace it right on the spot! As I was in a hurry to get home(I was going to go out with my mum), I went to the library and just found a very simple but cute picture of Mokona Modoki, Soel, from Tsubasa Chronicles as Soel is cute but has a simple design to it, I doubt that the printer can mess up the picture again. It was only when I got home that I found out that this is a fan made picture. Oh well... what ever...I've also posted a CLAMP picture of Soel below.....don't you think that Soel is so cute? For those guys who might be here looking at my post, please ignore me this fan girl raving.... :x

What a busy November for me....=^0^=

Are any of you guys going to get a 6-4 gathering again? Just for the sake of blogging here, I thought that it would be appropriate to inform you that I would not be free for either the half of the days or either the whole day. This is so as surprisingly, the number my end of year holidays activities comparing to last year's, increased incredibly. This year 2007, is the year in which that I have the most number of activities going on during the end of year school holidays. Every year during the end of year holidays, I mostly spent my time reading novels, using computer, watching television and going to public libraries(plus a couple hours of window shopping ^^). I normally only go out to the public libraries(and the malls) once in a week during holidays. Even if when I go out with my friends, it's only for at most 5 times in the 2 months holidays. It seems to be very pitiful to me for most of my other friends seems to go out every day. In case you are wondering, I don't usually touch my textbooks at all during the holidays and I will leave my homework until the last few days before I will start doing it.

But this will all change!!! As this November, I have couple activities already planned and also some others to be confirmed. Let me start with those in which have been confirmed. (It's not all play and no work!)

I will be attending a course in which I signed up for(along with one of my good friend), when one of the teachers came to my class and asked if we are interested. This course has only limited places and fortunately, I am in the course! Sadly, my good friend is not but fortunately, there's one people who wants to back out of the course and so my friend(the back up as the teacher says)is in the course with me too! What's this course I have been mindlessly rambling about? This course is named Digital Gaming Development, which is one of the Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) and our school will be collaborating with Temasek Polytechnic for this. This means that I will be going to Temasek Polytechnic to attend this course during 1-13 November 2007. Only 3 days are of half day session. I will upload a picture of my timetable here when I have time. The time in which the course will end for a full day session is 4.30pm. A typical half day session will end at 12.30pm if I am not wrong. Just in case you do not know, here's what I found about AEMs from Wikipedia,

AEMs may be used for polytechnic admission under the Joint Polytechnic Special Admissions Exercise (JPSAE) and the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) exercise. They may also be used for credit exemption in subjects that are relevant to the pupil’s subsequent course of study in the Polytechnic.

Hmmm....interesting.

Besides that, I am also not free for the whole day from 14-26 November 2007 as I am going over to New Zealand for a exchange programme with Te Puke High School, a high school in New Zealand! This is going to be a 14 Days 13 Nights trip along with 3 key personnel (Mr Yong Kek Shoong (VP), Mrs Sukhdev Singh (HOD EL/Literature) and Mrs Chia Siew Ching (SH Pupils’ Welfare). It's a small group as only 30 of us(students)(30 is the maximum number they would take.)are going there. This is going to be the fourth time my school organized a twinning programme to Te Puke High School. We are traveling by Singapore Airline. The original total cost for the whole trip was $3449 but then the school informed us that due to a surge in prices of jet fuel worldwide, Singapore Airline is imposing an increase of approximately of S$140 per participant at 1st August 2007. However, as my school has been working with the travel agency, Global Adventure Consultants Pte. Ltd. which has planned the previous trips to New Zealand, for two months, the company is willing to absorb partial cost of the increase. Thus, each of the participant will now have to pay an additional of $70. This brings the total cost pf the trip from $3449 to $3519. Before you gasp and faint, I am happy to say that due to the subsidies offered, and also that I can deduct $500 from my Edusave, I only have to pay $1126.

This trip includes 5 day hosting with one of the Te Puke High School student's family so we can get to know about their daily life. I am very excited about this trip for this is going to be the 2nd time I am going overseas and 1st time I am traveling by plane! I am going to borrow a very big suitcase from one of my uncles who always go overseas for work purpose. Besides that, some other preparations for the New Zealand trip included getting a cheer ready, a powerpoint about Singapore, dance and song performance, a symbol/picture to represent yourself for the polo shirt.....

The symbol/picture I have already handed it up as the deadline was on 28/09/07(Friday). If you don't hand up by the deadline, your symbol/picture will not appear on the polo shirt. I stayed back after school yesterday(28/09/07) to do last minute work for the symbol/picture. At first I wanted to use the picture below,

but then I found the picture below

on the internet. But as my school library printer for student use is only able to print black and white(as seen in the picture below)
, I print out the picture in black and white. Hence, I had two pictures to choose from to put onto the polo shirt. I was troubled for both pictures were very nice. Then I realized that as the polo shirt colour is black(we choosed the colour ourselves), the picture might not even show up on the polo shirt at all. So I used the colour printer used by authorized people(I am a librarian so I can use it) to print out the coloured picture(shown again below) and used it as a picture to represent myself.

every year, my favourite anime Doraemon will always be launching a new/re-make movie. so without fail, i always buy the VCDs. perhaps that you might think that i am such a childish person. but hey, that what that makes up me! anyway, if you don't like Doraemon, don't bother reading this post for that's what's it's going to be on about! back to the topic...so well now i am going to start intoducing about the new Doraemon movie named (Doraemon The Magic2007)(Nobita no Shin Makai Daibouken - Shichinin no Mahoutsukai)(ドラえもんのび太の新魔界大冒険～7人の魔法使い～) (大雄的新魔界大冒险~7人的魔法使者~). these are as far as i know, the different languages names for the new movie. basically the new Doraemon movie is a re-make of the Doraemon movie named (Nobita's Great Adventure in the World of Magic)(大雄的魔界大冒险)(ドラえもんのび太の魔界大冒険) launched in the year of 1984 . so with now-a-days better high quality graphics, i can expect a better and nicer movie to watch even though that (i think) the story is still the same! the trailer for the movie is below...watch it here or go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MIThYhWEuc to watch it...

hi everybody!
i agree with the fact that it's been a awfully long time since we meet...but firstly, thank you very much Huiting for creating this place where 6-4 can still exist! i was amazed that suddenly the tag board was filled with lots of different former friends and classmates tagging it..but...who's gabb?? i guess that my looks haven't changed a bit...but my likes and dislikes have changed a lot! in case those who don't know, i am using +-+miko kagome+-+ to tag the tag board. Kagome is a character from the popular Japanese anime Inuyasha. here's a picture of Kagome Higurashi...
i am sure that some of you guys who are Japanese anime fans have seen her before. Kagome is my favourite character ok? besides me being a big fan of Inuyasha, i had also bought a 61 keys keyboard with no weight from Carrefour last year October. here's a picture of it...
it costs me $159 that took me forever to save up. but i guess that it was worth it! luckily there's free delivery or i will die from carrying this heavy keyboard home from Plazza Singapura...i didn't have any piano lessons as it's just simply too expensive so i just print out piano scores and learned to play by looking at the notes. it's quite hard for some scores are way too tough...so i often asked my friends who are learning piano for help on how to play some parts. so currently i have learnt only a little little bit of what i wished to learnt. the songs i learnt are mostly from anime anyway, so i don't know if you have heard any of it before...this is just a short part of my life on what i am doing these past 3 years...oh yes, i took my picture for my IC only yesterday. i am quite happy with the result and hope that it will look just as nice in my IC!! have anyone of you made your IC yet? i guess that i shall blog till here...please tag my blog if you have time though..=^.^=
